Now What?

As a Christian, I find it difficult to maintain the correct balance of respect for and submission to our government in light of many policies that do not line up with my beliefs. I came across this sermon that John Piper preached just before the inauguration of Bill Clinton, and it is incredibly edifying and encouraging.

If you struggle with supporting a President who is pro-choice, then this is a must read. It might just change your view on how we are expected to behave as Christian believers. One thing I know for certain is that we are not called to respond to every mention of our President's name with rude sarcasm and cynicism. And we are not called to withdraw from the public arena because the person we wanted to be taking the oath of office today was nowhere to be seen. Instead we are called to submit and respect our government, insomuch as it does not conflict with the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

Can President Obama be an effective leader? Absolutely. Will things happen during his administration that we find to be at odds with Biblical truth? Yes. Are we still called to behave with love and strive to uphold the laws of the land. Without a doubt.

OH girl...this is SO good and SO communicates what the Lord has placed on our hearts. GOD is the one that gives roles of leadership...and for whatever reason...he allowed and ordained President Obama...to be our leader for this time. I pray for him, and I pray that he has a successful presidency...because it will me that we will have a successful America. I pray that he has a powerful, DIVINE encounter with our Lord...greater than one he has ever known!!! Thanks for the post! It's a great one!
Blessings,
Buffi

Amen! I've been dealing with similar thoughts this week. Normally, I'm a FoxNews junkie, but I haven't been able to even turn it on this week because my heart has not been in a celebratory mood. Yet... the Lord calls on my to respect and pray for those He allows in a position of authority over me. HE is in control, regardless of which political party holds the highest office in the land. He even knew that Barak would choose an openly gay minister to do the convocation at the inauguration. What's more... He allowed it. He's got this. Thanks for the reminder!

The longer I live the more I realize how much I do not know. I know for certain I do not know another's heart. And I know that God works to sanctify each in the timing that they can handle...I do not like to hear negative comments and assumptions and presumptions about the heart intentions of our new president and his spiritual needs. I would not begin to know what he needs spiritually. I will most definitely pray for him and I pray he is one of the best presidents we have ever had...my hope is not in man anyway. Yet I submit to and pray for my leaders that God alone has put into place for His good purposes. Thank you for this post. May we all remember that Christ died for us while we were yet sinners...and speak with humility and grace.

Thank you for this post, and for the insightful comments that followed. I couldn't agree with you more about how we're called upon to respond to our new president. I don't think that being pro-life and supportive of Obama have to be exclusive of each another.
