Family Secrets

I frequently post things that my children say, because I think they are cute. I want to remember those little moments in years to come, so I blog about them. But there are some things that are said within the confines of the nuclear family that become part of our lexicon forever. We are the only ones who know what it means, whether it's a phrase or just one word.

For instance, Rachel Anne at Home Sanctuary uses the term "company girl" in her family. When I was growing up, my sister would accuse my brother of "eating it all" if he ate the last cookie. Never mind that she had eaten most of the cookies and that he was just trying to get one before they were gone. In her mind, he ate them all. So, the phrase "he/she ate it all" became a family phrase that is still used today. If you are caught with the last bite of anything, you ate it all.

I also picked up the habit of saying "it deserves you right" instead "it serves you right," and I am incapable of saying it correctly now.

There are many other stories that I could share bore you with, but what I really want to know is your family secret. Is there a word or phrase that just makes you snicker privately every time you hear it out in the real world, because you know what it means in your family? Is there some phrase that you say incorrectly because it is so much a part of your language that you don't even recognize that you are saying it incorrectly anymore? Come on....what's your family secret?

What a cute idea for a blog. Much lighter hearted than the visions I got when I read the title! LOL! I had one recently pointed out to me. My hubby pointed it out and now HIS children will carry the mispronunciation on, thanks to me! LOL! My sons pronounced crayon as "crown". I thin kit is justa slgiht difference, barely noticeable at all but hubby always flips out saying, "It's crAY-ON." At which point I say, "It is a grilled cheese, not a CHEESE TOASTY!" Our poor sons will grow now saying both goofy things!

It's not a family secret, but my oldest daughter called her much-loved pacifier a "wajz." We have no idea where she got it. We would say, "You mean pacifier?" She would look at us with an irritated expression and say, "Wajz!" As if to say, "That's what I just said, idiotic parents!"

Of course, all pacifiers are now wajz in our house.

Well...I'm not sure if it is funny or not...but you know the little fuzz balls that you get on clothes sometimes? Well, I call those things "bounce shounky". Don't ask me why...I just have always called it that. It's weird...but that's what we call it!! There are several other things...but I REALLY shouldn't share it!! (hee hee) Great post!!!

I wish I had something like that in my family, but I can't think of any. That's fun though!!

Wouldn't you know it I can't think of ANYTHING off the top of my head? I'll have to think about it some.

First off, I have to say, this picture cracked me up and I couldn't believe you actually posted it. Aren't you the one who can't stand for people to breathe/whisper in your ear?!

My mind, too, is drawing a total blank. We've kinda gotten away from it, but we called Hershey's kisses "chocolate triangles" for years. That's what my son dubbed them when he was about 3. And he called M&M's "chocolate buttons."

When we asked our mom what the little plastic thing in the cooking, Thanksgiving turkey was...somehow the answer was, "...cancer. It's a cancer." So now, even as 'grown-ups', my siblings and I call it the turkey cancer.

p.s. Xandra, thanks for treating people with cancer.

Actually Coco you said, "Mom! It looks like the turkey has a cancer!" Just like that..... forever more..... it shall be known as the "cancer"!!
